LEC starts its first Community Outreach Program (mylbsonline/Liberia/Mar. 3, 2014)-The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has begun the first in a series of its Community Outreach Program in Monrovia and surrounding communities. LEC’s first outreach program was held Sunday, March 2, 2014 with residents of the 72nd Community in Paynesville. According to LEC Media Consultant, Hassan Kiawu, the program is aimed at interacting with residents of the various communities in Monrovia and environs to make them aware of the entity’s activities. Mr. Kiawu said: “LEC’s initiative is to educate the residents of the various communities about how the corporation is carrying out its electrification extension across Monrovia.” He further noted: “It is also intended to do away with public perception that LEC is selling light poles and to discourage power theft.” “Power theft accounts for 20% loss in generation income.” Meanwhile, LEC Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Planning, Joseph Mayah, and Lands, Mines and Energy Minister, Patrick Sendolo, say, if the entity is to succeed in its community-based electrification program, residents need to cooperate.
