LEEK & DISTRICT SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND UP Sunday 20th October 2013 Birchall Playing Fields was officially announced as being open and available for football teams to play on as of 20th October 2013. Staffordshire Moorlands Council having previously invested in redeveloping Birchall playing fields changing facilities have further invested this year on drainage to the pitches ensuring that Leek based football teams have both pitches and changing facilities that are up there with the best in the County. Teams playing at Birchall have this season experienced a delay in playing football on their home pitch and have had the inconvenience of having to play their matches away, but they are now ready to reap the rewards of the Councils significant investment into Birchall both this season and future seasons to come. The second round of the TB Williamson Cup saw Valiant Troggs and Waterhouses flying the flag for the Leek and District Sunday League as sole survivors in the competition. Facing a strong Ball Green side Troggs were in a confident mood not having lost this season and with an average of scoring five goals per game attack was not their concern but rather defence having conceded nine goals in the four league games played. Even without their star forward Mitch Cartlidge the first half saw Troggs go in to the break three one up with goals coming from Joel Mason and a brace from Mike Keates. The visitors stunned Troggs as they scored twice within ten minutes of the second half to level the game. Troggs however, made their relentless pressure on the visitors back four count as the visitors quickly tired from the constant wave of attacks as Keates bagged another two goals, and further goals from Jack Bowyer and inspirational winger Jack Keeling. It was a mixed day for Troggs as they sealed their entry in to the next round of the cup but saw Elmos knock them off top spot in the league. Waterhouses welcomed a home tie against Plaza in the cup having played their last two games away at Congleton not gaining any points. Waterhouses traditionally strong at home went a goal down after Mathew Clarke netted for the visitors after only nine minutes. Although poor for the first fifteen minutes Waterhouses got back in to the game and perhaps should have sealed the tie before half time having leveled the game after twenty five minutes thanks to a well worked goal by Paul Jacklin, but they remained a level going in to the break. Waterhouses started the second half the brighter side and created further chances to take the lead and put the game to bed but it was not going to be their day as a foul on Jason Buxton was not given and the visitors crossed the ball in to the Waterhouses box which Liam Shaugnessy headed home to double Plazza’s lead. Waterhouses pressed for the equalizer but were hit on the break as Ryan Boulton broke free and scored to secure Plazza’s victory and book their place in the next round. With Valiant Troggs in cup action it gave Elmos Celtic third in the league and Bayern Red Lion second in the league the chance to wrestle top stop from Troggs and with the two teams playing each other this week this was the game to watch this weekend. The game started with Elmos dominating possession and the first clear chance came when Ollie Mellor struck a shot from outside the area that flew just over the bar. Against the run of play Bayern Red Lion took the lead after a free kick was launched in to the box and Jamie Pope got on the end of it and scored. Mitch Shenton quickly leveled the game as he effortlessly went past two players and curled one into the top corner giving the Red Lion goalkeeper no chance. After a poor clearance from Sam Pettit which didnt get any distance, the ball dropped to a Bayern player and a deflection off Dale Walters fell to Ryan Shenton who slotted the ball in to the bottom corner. Just before half time Stuart Robinson had a great touch to bring the ball under his control but missed a sitter in front of goal which was harder to miss than score which left Red Lion in front at the break. The introduction of Will Bown for the second half had an immediate impact as he took a corner which was met by Mitch shenton who headed the ball home. Red Lion immediately re-took the lead after Dale Walters missed the ball as he attempted to clear it leaving Ryan Shenton a tap in which he duly took. Pettitt made up for his earlier mistake as the tall center back launched a throw in in to the box and found central defensive partner Nathan ball who scored a thumping header to level the game. The last twenty minutes saw three goals for Elmos as the hardworking Red Lion team struggled with fitness to keep up with them. Ollie Mellor struck to put Elmos in front and the game was made secure by Mitch Shenton who completed his hat trick and Matt Anderson. The game finished six three to Elmos who regained top spot back from Valiant Troggs albeit on goal difference only. Wellington were looking to make amends for their six nil thrashing at the hands of Valiant Troggs last week and only Dyers Arms FC stood in their way to keep them in touch with the top four in the league. Wellington put two past Dyers in the first half with Nick Webster and Chris Long scoring. The second half saw Long score his second for Wellington shortly after the break only for Daniel Evans to pull a goal back for Dyers within five minutes. Chances were created at both ends but is was Wellington who were the more clinical with Long getting his hat trick, Ash Hooley netting together with central defender Anthony Chisholm. Dyers were awarded a penalty that was taken and calmly slotted past the Wellington keeper by the ever clinical Andy Graham. Having beaten Leek Snooker Centre last week Biddulph Town Diamonds were looking to further progress up the table but faced stiff competition in Vale Hoppers at Back Lane Congleton. Jake Faulkner but Biddulph ahead after fifteen minuntes but Hopers managed to equalize before half time thanks to a goal from recent signing Josh Reddish. It was an evenly matched game that could have gone either way and Hoppers thought they had sealed the victory when Darren Byram but them in front with half an hour remaining but it was not to be as with fifteen minutes left Biddulph were awarded a controversial penalty and Faulkner stepped up and confidently placed the ball past the Hoppers keeper to equalize. Neither team could find the winning goal despite both teams best efforts and the points were shared. Leek Snooker Centre entertained a strong Valiant side who have yet to lose in all competitions. Valiant had the majority of possession during the first half which paid dividend for them with Rock Dunne Fox scoring after only five minutes and then getting his second after thirty minutes. Lee Fower scored Valiant’s third to give them a three goal cushion in to half time. Valiant decided to change the side around during the second half giving an opportunity for all the substitutes to take part in the game and this unsettled the team as Snooker Centre made more of a game of it and they were denied a goal as a thunderous shot which had beaten the Valiant keeper hit the cross bar. Dunne Fox got his third of the game to seal the three points for Valiant and to move them up one place to fourth behind third place Bayern Red Lion on goal difference only. Wellington United having lost the last four games in the league entertained The Ash Inn who are also struggling in the league having yet to acquire any points this season. Wellington not only took the three points but put sixteen goals past Ash Inn scoring eight goals each half. Lynton Varley stunned Ash Inn by scoring the first within a minute and two goals from Rick Barr and a goal from Adrian Findlow made it four within eight minutes. Adam Taylor, Tom Cutler, Ryan Smith and Rick Barr with his hat trick made it eight at the break. Wellington were just as ruthless in the second half with Ryan Smith getting his second of the game, an own goal, a well taken penalty scored by Steve Norman and Taylor netting another five goals to take his tally to six in the game finished off what was a miserable day at Westwood for Ash Inn.
