LEFT BEHIND The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has posted the heart breaking story of Zongoloni and we felt called to take a moment to highlight her rescue on this page. Zongoloni’s mother was shot in the leg by poachers shattering the bone. 2 weeks after numerous heroic attempts to save her life by the DSWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit and Dr. Poghorn, Zongoloni’s mother collapsed. Zongoloni was found keeping vigil over her dying mother and was so desperate for fluids that she was drinking her mother’s urine. “ Those that first located the collapsed mother with her dependent young calf waiting helplessly by her side, observed her drinking her dying mother’s urine she was so desperate for fluids. Under the scorching sun, this heartbreaking scene played out, the agony of a single bullet wound and the pain and suffering it wrought as the weeks past.” Out of compassion, Zongolonis mother was euthanized and Zongoloni rescued. Zongoloni is now safe at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Nairobi Nursery where she has a chance not only to survive, but to heal and in her own time return to her birthplace in Tsavo. This story, like so many before her, is a dark and wrenching reminder of the current poaching epidemic and the price of ivory. Please share Zongoloni’s story. Please spread the word.
