LESSON 3: CHRIST AND RELIGIOUS TRADITION The lesson makes a distinction between the actual dictates of God and man-made tradition. The Pharisees were a sect which tried to ensure obedience to the law. They however did not themselves comply with the law and when they did it was for popular acclamation. The law of the rabbis (see Lesson 1) which was meant to ensure obedience to the scriptures rather usurped the authority of the latter. Christs concern was that men were thus keeping the traditions of men instead. A gross substitution which turned the hearts of men from faith in the righteousness of Christ to a righteousness attained by their own efforts. May we not forget in a hurry that our esteemed righteousness is like filthy rags (see Isa. 64:6). God bless you all. HAPPY BLESSED SABBATH!
