LESSONS ::: Few things are as uncomfortable for me as giving a bass lesson. I havent done it in over 10 years, and I didnt do it that many times in the first place. It feels icky and dishonest. The few students I accepted all basically said the same thing. Me: So, why do you want a lesson? Im hardly an example of good bass playing. Why did you choose Me? Them: Well, I feel like Im in a rut. I play the same stuff over and over, and I dont know where to go next. Me: Well, I would recommend playing some things that have never occurred to you. Them: Its not that simple.... etc. Its very hard to explain to the unwilling that you cannot play past your memory unless you are willing to abandon your memory. Memory in music is used to prevent humiliation. The chronic prevention of humiliation is called writers block or a rut. I cant recommend much besides that. But one thing I CAN recommend is SLOMINSKYS THESAURUS OF SCALES AND MELODIC PATTERNS. This book is the antidote for folk harmony (i.e. traditional music....songs, rock, etc...) . It does not contain things you would actually want to play. But it DOES contain the chemical compounds that break down and wipe out habits. Impossibilities that become realities before your very ears. Use if you are in a rut. Open to any page and being playing. Create your own exercises based on whatever you find written there. You will never need lessons again. Best of luck!
