LESSONS IN LIGHTNESS The theme for the series of lecture demos Kay and I hope to do over the winter is Lessons in Lightness, Having watched some of the Dressage Masters series on Horse and Country TV I was struck by just what hard work it all looked ( I hasten to add that Carl and Charlotte were not there or at least I didnt see their tests!) but the overall impression was one of a lot of power, speed even, riders shovelling with the seat, legs flapping, heavy contact, just not the Art I have always felt dressage, whether Classical or Competition, should be. Thank god for our team! They really are setting the standard for lightness in competition, and have to say that Isabel Werth and Bella Rose have come back a long way towards more classical riding than for a long time. But for those with ordinary horses, what hope have we got to get to that level? Yet on the Continent you will see horses of all shapes and sizes able to perform high level movements- ok the owners are not competing but training to high levels for their own satisfaction and to have more fun with their horses. As my pal and EET level 4 Omar Rabia has proven with his very inexpensive cob mare Ketchup, you dont have to have even an Iberian horse to train! Kays ex racehorse Monty who will feature a lot in these demos, is another case in point, costing just £1200 he is starting much higher level work now and is lightness personified. So for those of you tired of doing endless 20m circles,( not those of you having EE lessons lol!!) there is light at the end of the tunnel, through the methods of French Classical Equitation which is fast becoming lost to time. Yes there are elements of the German School that we also incorporate, but it is the French system that will allow horses of much lesser talent to become the horse of your dreams! We intend to run a series of lectures and demos over the winter here at East Leigh Farm, Harberton, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 7SS- lots of excellent b and b close by too!. Dates yet to be finalised, but I hope there will be interest. So if you have a cob, or an ex racehorse, or an Arab or any other breed or crossbreed, dont think that beautiful light work is beyond your wildest dreams!! Classical is for everyone, and every horse!!
