LETS TALK GARBAGE: I find this to be a very important issue and recent events have led me to focus on the issue to get the facts to the citizens. I know it is long but sometimes it takes that to be clear and to provide ALL of the facts. I am posting(again) the complete transcript of the question and answers from both my opponent and myself regarding our views about privatizing city services. My opponent is running an ad saying I am misrepresenting his answers. I am reposting the SCRIPT FROM CANDIDATE FORUM SEPT 4th that I have posted before. Following it, I am including a script of his ad (taken from his website) where he denies making these statements. PLEASE take time to reach this and then make your own judgment. Also the Forum airs again TONIGHT on EPB Channel 6 at 8:30pm so please call people who are not on Facebook and let them know. FORM Sept. 4th. QUESTION: CHERYL BERRY: Would you favor privatizing some of city government’s present functions? If yes, which ones and how would that be done?” ANSWER: RHONDA Privatize city services. Let me think. As far as city services, most of what we do, Police Department, Fire Department, Street Department, they do not make money. It is not easy to privatize your street department; its not easy to privatize your fire department because they are not money makers. They are supported by the general revenues of the city. There has been some brief discussion early on about, for example, privatizing the ambulance service. I am not in favor of that however at this point. I think there are things we can do to improve the ambulance service and get them in a better position and we are working toward that. But off the top of my head I cannot think of a direct general service that would work very well in a private market. And again, you have to think about the citizens as a whole. And sometimes when you privatize something, people get treated differently. I’m all about doing the best I can for all the citizens so I would have to really think that I think before I leap in and make that sort of decision. QUESTION: CHERYL BERRY: Dick how do you feel about privatization? ANSWER: MR. DOTY: “The first two things that come to mind when I hear that question would be the ambulance service and trash pickup pas well. It is evident that Scotty’s has done a fantastic job with that in Warren County. I would be willing to bet that Scotty’s not losing any money in the trash business or he wouldn’t be in the trash business. So I think that that probably could be done. That’s something that would interest some private investors if we chose to do that.” The ambulance board, I know there are private ambulance services throughout the state so I think that is another one that could potentially be privatized. Not saying that I’m for that I don’t have any information on that. I think if we field a proposal on that it would certainly be something that would be worth looking at.” REBUTTAL ANSWER: RHONDA “Well the example that Mr. Doty has given about privatizing trash collection goes to my point. I was just saying we have to take on the best interest of the citizens. Any private trash service would probably be much more expensive than what we charge. Our current sanitation fee is $10 a month - $10 a month. Any of you that live outside the city limits and have private trash collection you know you are paying more than that. In additional we also have a program that was implemented under Mayor Twyman in 1983. We have almost 1100 households in our community that benefit from a discount on their trash collection because they are elderly or disabled. So that is a service we provide to those individuals. That would not happen under a private trash service.” THIS IS FROM DOTYs WEBSITE: PRIVATIZED TRASH COLLECTION RESPONSE This is Dick Doty, candidate for Mayor of Glasgow. Apparently, my opponent is attempting to speak for me on the topic of garbage collection. And she is doing a TRASHY job! I want to set the record straight. I have NEVER made a proposal to privatize Glasgow’s garbage collection service. I value that service and the low rates that are charged because it is a city service. Our current Mayor, Rhonda Trautman, has recently mass-mailed a letter to the citizens of Glasgow and she claims in that letter that I want to privatize garbage collection. That claim is not true, and my opponent knows it – she is misrepresenting the facts as part of a scare campaign. Here’s the truth – my opponent and I were both asked, during the Library/EPB forum, what areas of city government would lend itself to privatization. In responding, I simply indicated, as a general observation, that garbage collection is a service that could, theoretically speaking, lend itself to privatization, BUT -- never once did I endorse or even suggest that I was in favor of doing so in Glasgow! In fact, my exact quote was, “I am not saying I am for that . . . I don’t have any information on that”. I refuse to engage in negative campaign tactics and I WILL not try to scare the citizens into a frenzy to get their vote. A campaign should not operate like that. In fact, that is exactly the opposite of what I will do as Mayor of Glasgow. No deception . . . no misleading . . . just the truth and what is best for Glasgow. I’m Dick Doty, and I’m running for Mayor of Glasgow to end petty politics and begin a much brighter chapter for our city. Paid for by Dick Doty.
