LETTER FROM ROOPA GANGULY BY PRADIP BISWAS, THE INDIAN EXPRESS NEWSPAPERS JURY MEMBER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL OF INDIA JURY MEMBER, PUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, KOREA CURATOR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Roopa Ganguly, the actress of the most serious bent, has finally chosen to join the BJP. This is an act amounting to register a strong protest against the current regime of Bengal TMC, responsible for political disorder, gang rapes, usurping election booths, utilizing Police to further the vested interest of the TMC. The change the hoi-poloi brought about with a hope for Ram Rajya, has finally stood disillusioned to no redemption. Now they are gasping in a political ambience filled with poisonous smoke and air. Roopa has called her joining the BJP “the biggest decision.” In her defense she noted: “Two things led me to it. Firstly, the need to bring back peace in Bengal. Our state has changed the meaning of politics.” Yes, it is so and no intellectual can deny this. Her caveat is that nowadays the word, whenever it is uttered, makes one “uncomfortable.” Yes, it is so and no sensible people can deny this. Says she: “Politics to us, the people of Bengal, means something dirty, something nasty. The politics too can be done peacefully, we have forgotten.” True, very true. Her letter suggests: “I am hopeful that I would be able to bring about a small change so that there’s less negativity. I will fight for it and I am hopeful that we can bring back peace and harmony in Bengal.” The point of “harmony” is a term that needs to be probed with a scrutiny. No doubt, Roopa’s intention is encouraging!! But is it that easy, Roopa, to bring “harmony” with a Party ie the BJP lambasted by the Mumbai High Court and the apex Supreme Court for hatching killings minority community, the Muslims in particular, at Gujarat after Godhra riot?? All major stewards of BJP were charged with mayhem and political murders?? While looking into the dictates of the Supreme Court, this correspondent finds the BJP is being haunted by the specter of Babri Masjid demolition on 6th December in 1992!!! The only persona who gave his verdict against such atavistic activity was Vajpayee, the figurehead of the Party. The crime thus perpetrated by Advani and his gang is still festering in the hearts of Indians, irrespective of race, caste and creed. The aforementioned reference is a reminder to Roopa who is above others having sub-away understanding of the issues. However, I want to see Roopa bringing the “miracle” with the aid of the BJP and becomes Antigone!!! I agree “People of Bengal should have money, food to eat….People should work hard and build their own future.” But Roopa, during my fifty years of Journalism, I could seldom think Rahul Sinha of speech-speciality and of no major action, can guide you really as you in terms of mind-set and cultural ethos, lie above him and his entourage!!!!! I wish, Roopa, you don’t have to encounter “illusion” in the process. For I still trust others abide our questions, thou art free! END
