LETTER OF APPEAL TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1600 Clifton Road Atlanta GA, 30333 United States of America 4th August 2014 Dear Sir/Madam, Re: Request for support and vaccines towards the eradication of the Ebola Virus in Sierra Leone and the West African sub -region. DIASPORANS UNITE FOR AN EBOLA-FREE SIERRALEONE humbly requests your urgent assistance and support for the swift and successful eradication of the Ebola epidemic from Sierra Leone and the West African region. DIASPORANS UNITE is a social action group that seeks to bring together Sierra Leoneans living in the diaspora in a bid to build a stronger coalition towards the eradication of the Ebola disease from Sierra Leone and the sub - region. Quoting president Obama on the US - AFRICA Leaders’ Summit, ‘’I do not see the countries and peoples of Africa as a world apart; I see Africa as a fundamental part of our intercontinental world…’’. No doubt, a US African Summit is highly welcomed but real support for the socio- economic development of Africa is key to maximising the fullest cooperation between the two worlds- and this must begin with the Ebola outbreak crisis which is presently posing as an albatross around the neck of the West African region. The Ebola virus should be seen as a threat against humanity and not just an African problem. Due to the influx of trade and movement of people, the entire world stands at risk if this menace is not urgently addressed. As at 1st August 2014 for instance, the number of confirmed cases on Ebola in Sierra Leone was 540 and the number of Ebola deaths was estimated at 205 whilst the total deaths in the west African sub-region stands at 846 excluding deaths that remained unreported. As we write you this letter, it is vital to pinpoint that Sierra Leone is currently the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak and the president of the country has declared a state of public emergency thus signalling the need for more support and urgent action to be taken so as to limit the Ebola spread and impacts. Amongst the pressing things that are needed at the moment is a medicine for curing the Ebola disease, body gloves and gowns, shoe covers, facial masks, syringes, tubing, chlorine, hand sanitizers and any other additional medical equipment that you deem suitable to aid medical staffs in the fight against the Ebola virus. In light of the above, we are kindly requesting your support and assistance be it in cash or in kind or even in human expertise, vaccines and laboratory research to the Republic of Sierra Leone and the sub- region so that the governments will be better placed to fight the Ebola scourge and deal with the crisis situation. In the event where you feel inspired to give a helping hand and render your support to Sierra Leone, please contact the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Sierra Leone directly on: Directorate of Disease Prevention and Control Tel: +232 76913000 E-mail: dpcsurveillance@gmail Kindly endeavour to keep us informed as you reach out in support to them.
