LETTER TO POLITICAL PARTIES. Dear Sir I am a registered disabled male of 68 years living with my partner of 67 in private rented accommodation. We have been on a council waiting list for over 15 years and are both receiving the basic state pension and would dearly like to live in more affordable local authority housing, which seems as far away now as 15 years ago. My disability means that my partner and I sleep in separate rooms and this fact has been recognised by the local authority Medical Advisor who has reviewed my medical history and considered that a two bedroomed property is appropriate for our needs. We are currently claiming Housing Benefit to help with our accommodation costs. Regrettably the benefit we receive is discounted by 25% (Bedroom Tax) due to the fact that our present home has three bedrooms. This discount seems wholly unfair because if we were in council accommodation as pensioners this discount (Bedroom Tax) would, apparently, not apply. I could understand losing a portion of benefit for the third bedroom but to penalise us for two extra rooms when it has been deemed necessary that we need two bedrooms seems grossly unfair. I would like to know how or if you intend to rectify this unfair Bedroom Tax if you gain power in the next general election.
