LET’S TAKE A SECOND LOOK! Each Sunday I choose an object from - TopicsExpress

LET’S TAKE A SECOND LOOK! Each Sunday I choose an object from around the house and Lament about it, trying to take a common object and uncover a deeper meaning, whether it might be spiritual, psychological or emotional. Today I have chosen a magnifying glass. Earlier in the week, I was attempting to connect an indoor thermometer with a new outdoor sensor; the old one had been lost. Inside the new sensor was a spot for 2 AA batteries. I installed them, hung the new sensor outside, and sat down beside the thermometer to learn the outdoor temperature. It didn’t work. I opened up the battery lid on the sensor and double checked everything. Yep, the new batteries were installed correctly. Before closing the lid, I noticed some writing next to the battery compartment. The print was tiny, and no matter how I turned it to the light, it was too small to read. I handed it to Sue, but she had no luck with whatever the words were saying. Finally, I went and got my trusty magnifying glass, the one that lights up, and looked at the print. It said: Made by Oregon Scientific. Like that helped me out! Eventually, without attempting to read anymore, I got it to work, and now we know the outdoor temperature. Of course, I can also find out by using my smart phone, or in serious cases, I can actually walk outside. In most situation, a Magnifying glass is a helpful thing. As a kid, when I didn’t know any better, I used it to kill ants. Later on, I found you could actually make an autumn leaf smolder. When I started to develop the typical teen-age acne, I checked out my face in the mirror with the magnifying glass from the desk in the hallway, not that I could do anything about what I saw. Magnifying glasses give you a second look at things. They provide clarity and a better picture of what you are looking at. Sometimes, when I think I know what I”m looking at, a second look with a magnifying glass changes my outlook; my view becomes truer. I’ve been thinking about the importance of a second look at stuff, whether it is a person or a judgment. The word “Respect” literally means a “second look” at an idea or an individual. When you respect someone, you are saying you want to give them a second look, another glance in their direction, a closer picture. I believe it calls for an open mind to be able to take a magnifying glass and look at your own life’s story, to re-inspect someone you have been holding a grudge against, or to look closer at a decision you are making to “see” if you can uncover any distortion you may have been clinging to. To respect another is to re-investigate your conclusions, to be willing to say, “Maybe I made a mistake here.” How about an experiment for the next seven days? Carry around your own magnifying glass, whether real or imagined, and each time you find yourself agitated, annoyed, or hurt, take a second look. Respect the situation for our own good, and see what happens to any conclusions you might have previously held. It might shock you to see how your judgments have been distorted, but on the other hand, perhaps you will feel justified in your opinions. Regardless, you will feel more “clean” about your conclusions, since you have Re-spected the other person, or the situation enough to look at it again. Even better yet, take a second look at yourself with the Magnifying Glass to determine where you have “blown it” when it comes to your own self judgments and criticisms. This time, however, pretend that you are being seen by the eyes of someone who loves you, or wishes you well. Some people might even dare to look at themselves through the eyes of Divine Love... Talk about a second look, as well as a gift to yourself Who knew an ordinary Magnifying Glass could do so much? My Lament for tonight is for the times we examine others, or look at them, in a superficial manner, and arrive at a negative or unkind conclusion. This is where a Magnifying Glass can really do a holy number on your mind....Have a great Look!
