LEXINGTON, KY (Sept. 18, 2013) – Strong demand for Thoroughbred yearlings from the world’s largest buying bench continued Wednesday during the ninth session of Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale, once again driving double-digit gains in gross, average and median prices. On Wednesday, 311 yearlings were sold for $11,179,500, marking a 36.8 percent increase over the gross of $8,169,500 from the corresponding session last year. The average of $35,947 was 32.8 percent higher than the average of $27,051 recorded in 2012. The median of $27,000 rose 35 percent above last year’s $20,000. Cumulatively, a total of 2,022 yearlings have been sold for $264,436,500, up 23.5 percent from last year’s total of $213,980,500. The average of $130,780 is up 31.1 percent from $99,758, while the median of $77,000 is 40 percent higher than $55,000 last year. “The clearance rate today was 88 percent, which is phenomenal,” said Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. Cromwell Bloodstock, agent, paid $185,000 for the session’s top-priced horse, a colt by Kitten’s Joy out of the winning Stephen Got Even mare Esther Got Even. He was consigned by Dromoland Farm Inc, agent. The highest-priced filly of the day was a daughter of Ghostzapper sold to Bob Baffert, agent, for $140,000. Adena Springs consigned the filly, who is out of the stakes-placed Cozzene mare Cozy Gain, a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Broad Gains. The sale continues through Saturday.
