Wrote music and arrangements for and with Duke Ellington. He composed the band’s best known theme, “Take The A Train”. He also sat in on the piano with the Ellington Orchestra, both live and in the studio. 11-29-1968 Jonathan Knight - American singer. He was part of the group New Kids On The Block. In 2011 he stated, “I have lived my life very openly and have never hidden the fact that I am gay. Apparently the prerequisite to being a gay public figure is to appear on the cover of a magazine with the caption ‘I am gay’. I apologize for not doing so if this is what was expected!” 11-29-1979 Simon Amstell - LGBT comedian: English comedian, TV presenter, screenwriter, and actor. He is openly gay and Jewish which occasionally figure in his work. He is best known for his roles as former co-host of “Popworld”, and host of “Never Mind the Buzzcocks”. He was also co-writer and star of the sitcom “Grandma’s House”, commissioned by BBC2. 1952 - Betty Baxter - Canadian athlete, activist, and politician. She was a member of the women’s national volleyball team at the 1976 Summer Olympics and later became the team’s coach. She was fired in 1982 when the media began to report she was a lesbian. She was not out at the time but eventually did come out and served as a board member of the 1990 Gay Games in Vancouver. 1956 - Janet Aalfs - American poet and martial artist. While still in college she came out of the closet as a lesbian. She is co-founder of Valley Women’s Martial Arts and the Institute for Healing and Violence Prevention Strategies and the National Women’s Martial Arts Federation. Aalfs was also poet laureate of Northampton, Massachusetts from 2003 until 2005.
