LI SHUNA KO!/PUT IT BACK!: Flag dramas continue An incident in which a suspected Swapo sympathiser removed a DTA flag from a tree in the Onguta informal settlement of Ondangwa ended on a reconciliatory note on Wednesday afternoon. It was all smiles, jokes and handshakes after the self-confessed culprit Peingeombili Matheus, 28, restored the opposition flag to its position in a red milkwood (omwandi) tree. The Oshana Police recently called political parties and their supporters to order following two incidents that ended in violent clashes in the region. Residents who saw him removing the flag alerted DTA leaders, who then traced him to his residence, located about 150 metres away. “He removed our flag and when we caught up with him we gave him two options to either restore it or we would take him to the police. He freely chose to restore the flag,” said Lazarus Petrus, DTA regional co-ordinator in Oshana. One DTA supporter at the scene claimed that Matheus is a known Swapo sympathiser, but Matheus denies this. Matheus admitted he climbed the tree on Saturday, removed the flag and flung it down, because “it was put there by unknown people in the dead of the night”. “That is the reason I removed it,” he said. “I did not even know that it was a DTA flag.” He further said he is not very knowledgeable about party flags. “I only know the colours of Swapo and RDP flags,” he said. Matheus, who dismissed claims that he is a Swapo sympathiser or a supporter of any other party, fell silent when asked whether he would have removed the flag if it belonged to Swapo or the RDP. “He is not the problem. The real problem is leaders who do not educate their members and supporters on how to behave. Even President Hifikepunye Pohamba’s plea that the campaign must be peaceful is ignored with impunity,” said the DTA’s Matheus Salom. sun.na/local-news/flag-dramas-continue.73463
