LIBRARY NEWS AND EVENTS What had so much fun “digging in to reading” at the library last month. We ate bugs, touched trucks, decorated rocks, learned about dirt, had a pizza party and more. Thank you to the following for helping with this year’s summer programming: The Moretown Town Garage for preparing and showing us your trucks; Jamie Wimble for her crafting and story time skills; Mr. K of Exordium Adventures for his enthusiasm and knowledge about dirt; the Department of Libraries for providing a grant to pay for Mr. K; Zachary’s Pizza of Waterbury for donating delicious cheese pizzas; The Warren Public and Joslin Memorial Libraries for your collaboration; The Friends of the Moretown Memorial Library and all of our patrons who have donated time and money to the library. Programming like this is not possible without your support. Summer Reading kids, when you have completed your reading log come on in for your prize! Story time will be on break during the month of August and will resume on September 6th. Listen Up! Vermont, our provider of online audio and ebooks, has a new website that is easier to navigate on your devices. If you would like to learn to use Listen Up! Vermont on your smartphone or tablet, email or call the library and we can schedule a time to work together (moretownlibrary@gmail). Welcome to our newest volunteers at the library, Kelly Collar and Chris Costello. We are excited to have you on board! Did you just read a good book from our library? Let us know and we can share your thoughts with the community in our Community Book Reviews. Our first Community Book Review is from Lynn Morgan. COMMUNITY BOOK REVIEW by Lynn Morgan, Moretown, VT. If you like gardening and traveling, you’ll love this book. “America’s Cottage Gardens” by Eve Sonneman and Patricia Thorpe, presents a cultural anthropology of home gardening as a road trip across the United States, through people’s front and back yards from Los Angeles to Maine. Beautiful photos let you view the personal creations of home gardeners across the continent and the accompanying text explains the key cultural and climatic influences in the various locations. Although many of the plants are identified by name, this is not a how-to horticultural book, but rather presents the poetry and beauty of a cross-section of a human ecology of backyard gardens across the U.S. After reading this book, I felt I had made new friends across the U.S. I hope that Eve and Patricia will also publish their next road trip. NEW IN OUR COLLECTION Philipp Meyer’s eagerly awaited sophomore novel, “The Son” is now available. In this Western saga, Eli McCullough, the first male child born in the Republic of Texas, witnesses the murder his family at the hands of the Comanche tribe. Captured by the tribe, he learns their ways and adapts to his new life, until the community falls to white settlement. At sixteen, his life begins again in the white world where he builds a family empire with his ruthless ambition. In the bestseller, “Decisive: How to make better choices in life and work,” authors Chip and Dan Heath provide a manual on how to defeat the enemies of bad choices with the "WRAP model": Widen your options; Reality test your assumptions; Attain distance before deciding; and Prepare to be wrong. Maine game warden Mike Bowditch is transferred to an isolated county near the Canadian border in Paul Doiron’s “Bad Little Falls.” During a blizzard, Bowditch gets a call about a man lost in the storm. The rescue mission quickly turns into a murder investigation filled with twists and surprises. A Nantucket wedding is planned and only the bride and groom are having a good time. In Elin Hilderbrand’s newest family drama, “Beautiful Day,” the bride’s deceased mother has left a notebook filled with step by step directions on the nuptials. As preparations begin, secrets unfold and crises arise leading us down the path of a wedding disaster.
