LICENCES OF #GeoTv,#GeoNews AND #GeoTez SUSPENDED ISLAMABAD: A five-member Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority (Pemra) committee on Tuesday suspended broadcasting licences of popular Geo groups three television channels and ordered immediate closure of their offices. The decision was taken at a meeting here to review complaints filed against Geo network for showing allegedly blasphemous morning show on its entertainment channel and allegations by its news channel that the countrys spy agency, Inter Services Intelligence, had orchestrated the attack on journalist Hamid Mir in Karachi. The committee members told the media the decision was taken unanimously. But two-third of the committees members did not participate in the meeting. Only private members attended the meeting while government representatives did not show up. Pemra has suspended the licences of Geo TV (Entertainment), Geo News and Geo Tez with immediate effect. We could have revoked the licenses as the quorum was incomplete. However, we have adjourned the decision until May 28 for we want all the members to be present at that meeting, said Pemra member Israr Abbasi. He added a final decision whether to cancel the licences will be taken on May 28. Abbasi alleged Geo owner Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman had called Pemra members and was trying to influence their decision by offering bribes as well as making threats.
