LIFE IS FUNNY #18945--So when I saw Nirvana in 1992 (with Victoria F.) they did a song hardly anyone in the crowd knew, the wistfully ironic Vaselines song Jesus Wants me for a Sunbeam--they hadnt performed it on the famous unplugged session yet, but id heard their electrified version on a bootleg 45 in friends dorm room, and had checked out the Vaselines catalog earlier after hearing the peel sesh where Kurdt and co rocked thru Son of a Gun and Mollys Lips. It was sort of a special moment for me when ol Nirvana played Jesus... at the Aragon, and no one else seemed to care. A few years later I saw the Vaselines Eugene Kellys band Eugenius open for Mudhoney, and then headline at Lounge Ax, oddly one of the loudest bands I ever saw for being so poppy. I got to meet Eugene briefly, and he was like some rock n roll royalty to me. Flash-forward to 2013, while visiting Glasgow, somehow I end up watching my pal Andrew Paine and Frances of the Vaselines peel wallpaper off her ceiling, while i sit by and ask questions and laugh it up w/the 2 of them. So last night I actually get to SEE the Vaselines for the first time ever, and Frances gives me a shout-out from the stage, and I turned a little red as she says I saw her strip (wallpaper off the ceiling) and she says i didnt help them peel the wallpaper (there were only 2 ladders!) ha....and finally i get to see them perform Jesus Wants me for a Sunbeam and authentic to their proto-indie shambly roots, Frances totally screws up the song, with Eugene needing to call out where the guitar solos are, and berating her onstage after the song, while Frances just laughs. Somehow it was an emotional moment for me, i got seriously choked up during that tune, and life seemed so full circle i could hardly stand it. I hugged Frances goodbye at the end, and just thought life is sure funny..... THE END
