LIFT OFF FOR $13 MILLION STEGH FUNDRAISER . . . A little boys wish helped get Elgins largest-ever community fundraising campaign off the ground and high into the air Wednesday in St. Thomas. Two-year-old Oden Collins provided the inspiration for a balloon launch yesterday at St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital which also launched a $13 million campaign for hospital expansion. Father Ben who, with wife, Meghan, is an ESL teacher at York University, explains he had bought his son a toy, astronaut Lightning McQueen from the movie Cars. “He said, I want a real astronaut.” Three hours on the Internet later, Ben promised his son to send the toy into near space with a high-altitude weather balloon launch. The stunning result posted to YouTube documents the toys flight last month from takeoff near Exeter to its landing 115 minutes later near Mt. Elgin. And it led to Wednesdays event at STEGH, where Odens grandfather is hospital boss Paul Collins. Full story here bit.ly/1nPgJBv
