{{{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} {{{{{{ LINCSSA PRESS }}}}}}} {{{{{ -----Editorial-----}}}}} {{{{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} August 15th: things you should know Last week, we were amazed by reactions of some of our esteem associates in Ikire campus of Osun State University. At the same time, held aback by level of intellectualism of others who against all odds and pressure, remain undaunted to admiration of all. Quoting Einstein, Ayodele Bakare, one of our respected readers, then, maintained that, Without deep reflection one knows from daily life, one exists for other people. This didnt only interest us, but also inspire us to write this piece. This piece, it must be stressed, is not aimed at pointing accusing fingers at any student neither is it targeted at praising the management. Rather, after a thorough consultation and steady observation, we write to juxtapose issues bothering on August 15th, 2014, incident which stemmed from an unpleasant accident. The need to diligently reflect upon the incident becomes imperative owing to speculations in connection with what exactly capture the phenomenon; protest or riot? Protest, otherwise known as remonstrance or a remonstration, is an expression of objection by words or by actions to particular events, policies, or situations. Protesters may organise a protest as a way of publicly making their opinions heard in an attempt to influence public opinion or government policy. Admittedly, protests are part of a systematic and peaceful campaign to achieve a particular objective. It involves the use of pressure as well as persuasion. Often, protest is generally characterised by songs. Written evidence or petition letters may also be a way of protesting. Whereas, riot, it was reliably gathered, is a form of civil disorder commonly characterised by a group lashing out in a violent public disturbance against authority, property or people. Riots typically consist of disorganised groups that are frequently chaotic and exhibit herd behaviour. Unlike protest, it follows inverted social norms. Historically, riots occur due to poor working or living conditions, oppression, conscription, conflicts of interests, or frustration. It typically involves vandalism and destruction of property. In his piece christianed, The Difference Between Protesting & Rioting Frank Borelli, (MAY 2, 2012) said, an action is either legal or illegal. Once a protester breaks the law or disobeys a lawful order then a crime has been committed. Protesters dont break the law. RIOTERS break the law. Words and labels carry weight. Protesting is an inalienable right, recognised by the Constitution. RIOTING is a crime. Referring to rioters as protesters infers that their actions arent criminal when, in fact, they are. When law enforcement professionals take action against protesters then we are seen as government agents oppressing the people. When law enforcement professionals arrest rioters, vandals and looters, we are seen as protecting lives and property; doing our job and justified in it. He disclosed further. Without gainsaying, theres no substitute for strategic and careful planing. Protesting is only protesting if no crimes are committed. The moment the protesters commit crimes, then the protest has become a riot and law enforcement action is mandated. From the foregoing, we humbly hope that rational students get some gists and thrust of the subject matter? __________________________ Our heartfelt condolence goes to the family and friends of our beloved Binuyo David, we also wish other victims of the accident a speedy recovering and beseech God to prevail over the lingering crisis._________________
