LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY I remember that when I was in secondary school, I participated actively in this literary and debating activities. One school facing the other school. The champion in a town proceeded to face the champion of the other town. So we did till we got to the state level. Let me remember how we did it as one of the speakers... Good afternoon Mr. Moderator, Impartial Judges, Honourable Time Keeper and my fellow students. I am here to support the motion that the male child is better than the female child... Then you start your blah blah blah. You were forced to round off when the honourable time keeper jingled the bell. How did we round off then? With these my few points, I believe Ive been able to convince you that the male child is better than the female child. Thank you. The students clapped for you as you waka to your seat. This debating society helped us to develop confidence in speaking good English and facing the crowd without fear! That time, there was a subject called Oral English. I dont know if it still exist. It was through that subject we knew how to pronounced so many words: for instance educate is rightly pronounced ejucate. During is rightly pronounced juring. Glory is rightly pronounced glor..ry. Do u get it? We also knew that the article THE is rightly pronounced as d when the next word starts with a vowel. For example, the (d) Easter period. And pronounced da when the next word starts with a consonant. For example the (da) player is coming. All these, the judges listened to when debating to score us. I dont know if this generation of African Magic and Terry G still do it! I beg, do they still have Literary and Debating Societies?
