LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – So after topping the 200-yard mark in only his second collegiate start, freshman Nick Chubb is going to take Sunday off right? © Nelson Chenault/USA Today Sports Images Well, not exactly. “Tomorrow is a work day,” Chubb said. “We’ve got to come in and work, and then we’ll have Monday off.” Now two games into the national saga that has been the suspension of Todd Gurley that storyline is going to continue to dominate discussion and headlines because of that player’s stardom. But Gurley wasn’t here Saturday, and Georgia is still playing well and taking control of the SEC East without him. “Were doing something right,” Chubb said with a smile. So much hand-wringing and discussion has naturally accompanied the Gurley mess of the past two weeks around UGA that it’s time to acknowledge a questions that needs to start being asked more often. How about this guy who has replaced Gurley? Georgia has won both games, with Chubb totaling 345 yards on 68 bruising carries. By the end of both games, the opposing defense wanted no more of Chubb, who in turn seemed to get even stronger in the fourth quarter. “I feel good. Whatever it takes, you know?” Chubb said. “Ive got to do it. Were down on backs. … We dont have Todd. So everybody is still stepping up and playing hard.” Chubb actually said after the game that he’s ready to run some more. “You take for granted having Gurley and how spectacular he was,” quarterback Hutson Mason said, “and then asking a true freshman who just graduated from high school and what hes doing with all the publicity and that sort of thing, its just phenomenal what hes doing.” “Hes built for it,” UGA coach Mark Richt said of Chubb. “Hes very, very tough physically and mentally. Hes strong. But I think he came from a high school in Cedartown where theyre just tough. They coach tough. Their offseasons tough. He didnt get babied in high school at all. He was not one of those guys where you could sit there and say he was given anything because he was a very good football player. He had to earn it every day in practice and in offseason workouts.” Alabama’s entire team gained 66 rushing yards a week ago against this Arkansas defense. Chubb gained 202, which was only six yards shy of Gurley’s career high of 208 that he set a few weeks ago. And Chubb could have actually topped that easily had he stayed in the final few minutes. “Were doing something right,” Chubb said with a smile. “Hes wise beyond his years, and also hes developed beyond his years in terms of a football player,” receiver Chris Conley said. “Chubb is a guy who is extremely talented, and due to the talent of Sony (Michel) and Todd, a lot of people didnt really get to see that early on. But theyre getting a good dose of Chubb right now.
