Cagayan de Oro City (CDO) is the only city in the Philippines that made it to the shortlist of United Nations ‘emerging city of tomorrow.” Other cities include Hunchun, China; Johor Bahru, Malaysia; Malmo, Sweden; Nampula, Mozambique; Onitsha, Nigeria; Santa Marta, Colombia; Tetouan, Morocco; and Uberlandia, Brazil. The question is… Why Cagayan de Oro? An article published by Philippine Daily Inquirer substantiated the reasons why Cagayan de Oro has been named as ‘emerging city of tomorrow.’ In 2013, CDO became the most competitive city of the Philippines by the National Competitiveness Council. The city government pioneered in the computerization of business permits and licensing as well as the assessment and payment of real property tax. CDO’s economic growth continues to exceed those of the other regions in Mindanao and its gross domestic product (GRDP) went up to 7.2 percent in 2012 compared to the 5.8 percent growth in 2011. CDO is the center of education in Mindanao. Xavier University is the first university in the island and the first Jesuit university in the Philippines. Capitol University and Liceo de Cagayan University are cited by the National Association of Colleges and Universities as among the country’s top 10 higher education institutions with the largest number of accredited programs. Destroyed by Typhoon Sendong in 2011, CDO was able to bounce back and stands stronger today. All these are just few of the reasons why Cagayan de Oro is the only city in the Philippines considered by the United Nations as an emerging city of tomorrow.
