LOBSTERS - Did you know, that lobsters are of the spider family? Yep, count those legs...8 of them. Insects have 6. Lobsters were so plentiful in the early colonial days that they were listerally everywhere, washed up on beaches sometimes a couple feet high. What were they used for? They were junk, collected, crushed and used as fertilizer for the native peoples crops, the meat was use for fishing, not eating. As a matter of fact, the lobster was so frowned upon that it was fed to prisoners and slaves of the time, and it became a law that it was so cruel to feed such people lobsters but twice a week and not more often. It wasnt until the mid to late 1800s when lobsters became known in a positive light, thus the first traps were built to start collecting them as a wanted staple food of the time. It became so widely accepted that they became over harvested, thus, why there are laws on them like any other goodies out there, there are size limits, and harvesting limits....permits and licenses purchased....and of course, comes the law enforcers to enforce those laws. So from junk-junk, to a world wide known delicacy....today, we feast on lobsters!
