LOCAL ARTISTS BRING A CENTURY OF AWARD-WINNING EXCELLENCE TO ST. AUGUSTINE ART AND CRAFT FESTIVAL EVENT: 48TH ANNUAL ST. AUGUSTINE ART AND CRAFT FESTIVAL DATE: SAT. NOV 30; 10AM - 5PM; SUN, DEC 1; 10AM - 4:30PM LOCATION: FRANCIS FIELD, 29 CASTILLO DR., ST AUGUSTINE, FL 32084 St. Augustine, FL (Nov. 15) - The St. Augustine Art Associations Art and Craft Festival has been an integral part of the St. Augustine art scene for over 50 years. This years festival features artists from Florida to Canada, but four of Northeast Floridas own collectively represent a century of award-winning artistry. Jewelers are always popular at the Festival, and Charles Carubia is no exception. I try to create a feeling of movement in my work, says Carubia. His fluid style melds silver, gold and precious stones into individual pieces inspired by the beauty of nature in Northeast Florida. Carubia participated in the St. Augustine Art and Craft Festival for the first time in 1976, and has returned regularly for the last 37 years, garnering numerous awards. Another resident of St. Augustine, and longtime participant in the Festival is Pam Pahl. Her marine watercolors narrate both the tranquility of the small boats of Floridas coasts, and the majesty of the ships of the US Navy. Pahls career in the marine industry is reflected in the proportion, line and movement of every vessel she illustrates. Sam Kates, a Florida native, paints coastal scenes reminiscent of old Florida during the 1940s-50s. Sketching trips in the 1950s inspired his first paintings of shrimp boats, crowded docks and the huge sand dunes of New Smyrna Beach which have long since eroded away. Kates stresses the importance of observation and describes his style as painterly realism, full of detail to document his subjects, and capture a bygone era. This year marks Photographer Ken Barretts 30th year participating in the St. Augustine Art Festival. From his first composition class at the Art Association in 1967, to winning first place at last years Festival, Barretts iconic photographs and lifetime of creative achievements reflect the beauty of St. Augustine and its growth as an artistic hub. This Thanksgiving weekend, the rich variety of St. Augustines artistry is on display Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1, at Francis Field. From painting and photography to jewelry and other hand-crafted creations, the St. Augustine Art and Craft Festival is a holiday tradition not to be missed.
