LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM DECISION: A PROGRESSIVE STEP The Members and Leadership of the Congress of the People, applaud the Prime Minister’s announcements of the introduction of a small suite of Local Government Reform measures, but more so, the introduction of the system of Proportional Representation into the political framework of Trinidad and Tobago. We see this development as a very progressive step toward ensuring the manifesto promise of real participatory governance, affording an opportunity for the population to ensure that their voices are heard utilizing the democratic process. The COP has been on national record as championing the cause of constitutional and local government reform, with a view to enacting key issues such as term limits for the Prime Minister and the revision of the current first past the post electoral system. We believe that the announcement of the anticipated date of the Local Government Elections should be viewed as a principled and laudable decision, as it demonstrates that the Prime Minister’s, and by extension, Government’s approach ensures that the National community is afforded its franchise rights, when they are legally due. The Congress of the People congratulates it’s Political Leader The Honourable Mr. Prakash Ramadhar, Minister of Legal Affairs for staying the course to influence governmental policies. We look forward to the Congress of the People continuing to take the lead in more dialogue between the Partners of this coalition government. Anirudh Mahabir [ Dr.] Deputy Political Leader Congress of the People
