LOCAL GOVERNMENT STAFF SHOW COMPASSION Kgosi David Mafikizolo of Pandamatenga in the Chobe District has commended the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development employees in the northern region for their contribution to the development of the nation. Speaking at the handing over of a two bedroomed house to Ms Luzani Friday of Pandamatenga on June 26, Kgosi Mafikizolo said the gesture indicated that public servants were not only interested in getting salaries but were also concerned about the welfare of the community they served. He said the donation also indicated that the employees worked in unity and appealed to them to extent their hand to other areas, noting that his village was fortunate as the house was a third one to be donated this year Councillor Caster Mpebe of Kazungula/Lesoma Ward applauded the employees for having managed to help the needy despite their low salaries. He said their gesture indicated that they understand the welfare of Batswana better and encouraged those who retire from the service to join active politics as they already understand the needs of Batswana. Cllr Mpebe pledged P500 for every charity project that the employees of the ministry’s northern region will undertake. Chobe District Administration Tribal Secretary, Ms Lorato Mogopodi said the northern region is made up of eight districts namely, Chobe, Selibe Phikwe, North West, North East, Sowa, Ghanzi, Francistown and Central District. Ms Mogopodi said the donation was an extension of their performance improvement initiative and was aligned to the Vision 2016 pillar of a compassionate, just and caring nation. She explained that each employee donated funds to ensure the project was a success and thanked the Construction Industry Trust Fund (CITF), Department of Electrical and Building Engineering Services (DBES), Chobe Brigade and Mr Winston Mlazie for their contributions. She said the employees intended to select another beneficiary in Ghanzi district next year. In an interview, Ms Friday who also has a back yard garden from the poverty eradication programme thanked the donors. The 44-year-old Ms Friday who has four children noted that she survived through Ipelegeng and selling vegetables from her back yard garden. She explained that she sold vegetables to pay school fees for her two younger children and pay water bills. ENDS Source : BOPA
