LOCAL Museum Education and Audience Engagement Internships at Springfield Museum of Art in Springfield, OH Overview The Springfield Museum of Art is accepting applications to our 2014-15 internship program. Internships at the Springfield Museum of Art are designed to provide hands-on museum work experiences that enable students to apply their knowledge of visual arts, art history, design and education, as well as develop skills in time management, organization, and oral and written communication. A limited number of internships are available to students who are currently enrolled at Wittenberg University at the junior or senior level. Students pursuing study in visual art, art history, art education or non-profit work in the cultural sector will be considered. Internships are for one semester and may be taken as non-credit or for-credit (arranged by the student through Wittenberg and pending your institution’s approval). Subsequent semester internships may be available. School year internships are unpaid. Academic/Professional Focus Students will work as part of a team to develop and facilitate our Audience Engagement program. Through a variety of tasks and projects, interns will help the Museum in our goals to increase our audience base and to scaffold meaningful experiences for visitors of all ages and demographics. Time Commitment Students must be available for a time commitment of approximately 15 hours per week. Typically, 10-12 hours will be set at the museum on a regular schedule, with an additional 3-5 hours per week scheduled through on call programs and events and/or at-home work tasks. While the Museum will work around your academic schedule, flexibility outside of your class time is expected. Internships are un-paid and generally run 12-14 weeks during fall or spring semesters. (Summer internships may also be available.) Audience Engagement Internship Activities Internship activities may include but are not limited to: •Assist in the development of gallery curriculum under the guidance of the museum educator, including researching, writing and presenting. These curriculum materials will focus on works of art and artists from SMoA’s permanent collection and special exhibits. •Implement docent and educational gallery programs in collaboration with, or under the guidance of, the museum educator. •Research, write and design gallery materials to engage visitors. •Maintain learning stations in the Interactive Art Lab including material prep and organization; share interactive activity and design ideas. •Assist with youth art programs at the Museum and off-site with partner schools/organizations. •Support exhibition work including gallery preparations (sand, spackle, paint), art handling and hanging. •Support visitor services including some event and front desk shifts; learn about all SMoA programs and logistics to share with visitors in person and over the phone; register students for classes as needed. •Assist with information related to collections for data base entry and organization. Additionally, students are expected to keep a weekly journal time log to record their tasks and experiences and complete readings related to internship activities as assigned. Students may be asked to attend meetings, programs and events related to internship experiences.
