LOCAL NEWS The people of Randalstown have reacted angrily to an attack on a local council worker. Street cleaner Ryan Nicol was attacked in the Neillsbrook area on Wednesday morning as he started his day’s work. He was taken to hospital and later released and took to Facebook to thank wellwishers for their support. “Many thanks to everyone for their kind well wishes,” Ryan said. He added: “It is great to know that I am well thought of in Randalstown. I am doing well and I hope to be back to work [on Thursday].” Ryan featured in the Antrim Times back in 2007 for his colourful dust cart, which he drapes in tinsel and decorations every Christmas. Mayor of Antrim, Councillor Brian Graham, said he was saddened and appalled about the incident. “Antrim Borough Council staff should be able to come to work without fear of violence or abuse from members of the public,” Cllr. Graham said. He added: “This gentleman is well known in the area for his commitment to his job and regularly receives praise for carrying out his duties to such a high standard. “I have no doubt that the community of Randalstown will pull together and show him their support.” South Antrim MLA Trevor Clarke described the attack as “despicable” but praised Ryan for returning to work. “It’s great to see Ryan back to work after this despicable attack,” Mr Clarke said. He added: “I would appeal for anyone with information to contact police to help with their enquiries.” Scores of people had earlier taken to social media to condemn the attack on the popular young man. Neillsbrook Community Development Group posted on their Facebook page: “We would like to condemn the brutal and cowardly attack upon a young council worker earlier today in the estate. “Our thoughts are with Ryan at this stage; he’s out of hospital and back home but very traumatised. “If anyone has any information, please pass onto the relevant authorities. “There can be no hiding place for such thugs or those who harbour them.” Randalstown Cultural Awareness Association also condemned the attack and posted: “Ryan was going about his business when he was assaulted. “We urge anyone with information on this individual who carried out the attack to come forward. “We hope Ryan has a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back to work.” South Antrim PUP added their condemnation describing it as a “cowardly callous assault”. “The manner of this attack has enraged many,” a spokesperson said. They added: “I trust Ryan will recover soon and the thug will feel the full force of the legal system. “Anyone with any information on this please contact the police.” Others commenting on Facebook expressed their disgust and anger at the attack. One gentleman posted: “I like most descent people in Randalstown am horrified at the assault on young Ryan who cleans the streets of the town I hope those responsible are caught and punishised for this cowardly act.” Another posted: “Good news that Ryan is ok and will be back to work tomorrow but let’s make sure the person responsible is caught and taken off our streets that Ryan keeps so clean.” Police are appealing for information following the assault which occurred at around 8am on Wednesday, January 7. Inspector Jim Nesbitt said: “I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has any information to contact Police at Antrim on 101.” Information can also be given to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
