LOL! None of you got it right. I made bird brownies!! I feed my garden birds all year around, and this is one of their favourite snacks. Here is my recipe, and you will be richly rewarded with a bunch of feathered friends that you probably never even knew lived in your area. One ball or brownie a day, for a happy garden! RECIPE FOR BIRD SUET BALLS OR BROWNIES: You need to ask your butcher for mutton or beef fat chunks (suet) 1 cup peanut butter smooth or chunky. 2 cups corn meal (mealie meal) 2 cups quick oats (just the cheapest oats you can find) 1 cup melted down suet One third of a cup of brown sugar 1 cup white flour bird seed (about a cup) de-husked sunflower seeds (about a cup) crushed unsalted peanuts or nut sprinkles, about a cup. (no salted nuts!) If you use chunky peanut butter, you need not worry about extra peanuts. Method: Fully render the suet and strain. Then allow it to set. Re-boil and allow to set again. Put all your ingredients into a bowl except the fat. Melt the fat that you rendered, and allow it to get very hot, but do not burn it before adding to the rest of the ingredients. Stir very well. You can either roll balls, but your hands end up very sticky indeed. I found it easier today to make brownies in the baking pan. This way, you can also add a layer of sprinkle nuts, or a layer of seeds in between. I cut the squares whilst still warm, (you are not baking them! - just using the baking tray as a mould), and they came right out of the pan without sticking. If you are rolling balls, and you find that the mixture is getting too stiff, then transfer your mixture into a plastic bowl (if it started off in a metal one), and microwave briefly. This makes it more workable. Repeat if necessary. I triple the above recipe, and it makes about 32 good balls. You can store either in the fridge, or out of the fridge. One ball a day makes very very happy birds, and a joyous garden!! Hint: 800 grams (usual jar of peanut butter = 3 x 250ml cups.) Useful for those doing the 3 x recipe.
