LOL! Venus Williams in playing in a tournament in Québec this weekend. The fans love that she gave an interview in French, but theyre chuckling a little bit as well. She described Québec as une ville gorgeuse, by which she was obviously saying that it is a gorgeous city. The problem is that gorgeuse is what is called a false cognate: a foreign word that looks like a word in English, but means something different. She actually called Québec a city that stuffs its face like a hog :-) Thats the difference between Parisiens and Québécois. In Paris they would be more upset about the bad usage than the insult, real or perceived. In Québec, theyre so thrilled she was trying to speak French theyve all but adopted her.
