LONDINIUM: Londons Roman Amphitheatre was constructed with stone - TopicsExpress

LONDINIUM: Londons Roman Amphitheatre was constructed with stone walls that supported a timber framework of tiered seating and was initially built around 70 AD. It was upgraded in 120 AD with ragstone walls and could hold between 6000-7000 spectators. The Londinium amphitheatre was discovered during expansion excavations of the Guidhall Art Gallery and the site is now visible in an underground chamber beneath street level. However, the size of the ampitheatre is most evident above ground, where a ring marks the circumference of the overall structure in the forecourt entrance. But, as they say, all good things must come to an end. The amphitheatre was abandoned in the 4th century and, it is believed, become a derelict rubbish dump during the late Roman period. Charming! Has anyone stepped back in time at the Londinium amphitheatre?
