LONG-AWAITED HONOR TO COME TOMORROW FOR VALLEY WWII VETERAN A Rio Grande Valley native Tuesday will be receiving what his fellow veterans say is a long past due honor. Private Pedro Cano will be posthumously awarded the militarys highest combat award -- the Medal of Honor. Itll happen in Washington D-C in a mass ceremony honoring those veterans who a congressional review found had been bypassed for the award due to bias. Most of the 24 veterans to be honored are of Hispanic or Jewish heritage. Cano is being honored for his actions during World War Two. During two days of fighting in December 1944, with his fellow soldiers pinned down, Cano advanced through German terrain and destroyed seven machine gun positions, killing more than 30 Germans. Cano was born in Mexico, but grew up in Edinburg, and became an American citizen after his military service in 1946. He died in a vehicle collision in Pharr in 1952 at the age of 32.
