LOOK BEFORE YOU LOCK (Oklahoma City) April 28, 2014 Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel with representatives from AAA Oklahoma, Safe Kids Oklahoma, and OU Medicine spoke about the dangers of leaving children in cars. In 2013 44 children in the U.S. died as a result of heat related illness due to being left in a vehicle. Any time someone sees a child alone in a car they should call 911 immdiately, said Sheriff Whetsel. Dont hesitate, give first responders a chance to save a childs life. Also in attendance at the news conference were a group of students from John Ross Elementary School in Edmond. These students won a national contest by coming up with a unique concept. The device would save lives by alerting the cars driver that a child was left inside the vehicle, and automatically activate the cars horn and roll down the windows. In the past 11-months heat illness deaths have happened in nearly all 50 states. Temperatures inside a vehicle can go up 20-degrees in just 10 minutes, children and pets are very susceptible to heatstroke. Please look before you lock when you have children with you.
