LORD, THAT I MAY KNOW THEE DEEPER AND MORE Peace of the Lord is with you! In the gospel passage of today, Jesus asked His disciples as regards who himself is a (see Lk9;18-24). First he asked them as regards who the crowds say he is. They gave the crowds’ mind. Afterwards , it was their turned when he asked them; “But who do you say that I am” (Lk 9;20). The question of identity is one of total importance. If I do not even know myself; that I am a human being, that I have dignity, that I am of unrivalled value because of the awesome price at which I have been ransomed (the Blood of Jesus, see 1 Pet. 17-19), that I am a package of immense powers that God has sown and put within me to be actualized in time and eternity above all etc, any other thing cannot have any place as regards me as far as human potential and achievement are concerned. There are lots of very deep things to learn from the scriptures as usual but let’s focus our attention on some for now. It should be the case that people should say what they know, but when someone says what he does not know, it amounts to falsehood if it were due to the fact that they did not understand, they were mistaken, and they were misinformed or un-informed. Then, it will amount to a lie if they say what they do not know because they were mischievous. How many people tell tons of lies today, especially when they witness in law courts, saying on oath, that what they were going to say will be the truth and nothing but the truth, even when they knew nothing about what they were going to testify upon that they know! Jesus’ question appears simple but it is a very deep one. One cannot proclaim what one has not known. Surely, Jesus was not surprised to hear the sort of answers he got. He will not be surprised for two reasons; one, he is God and he knows everything , and that surely includes what is in our thoughts, what is going to be said or what is to come what is to come. Secondly, he knows that they do not know him, so they cannot proclaim the truth about what they do not know. It was when Jesus was praying in solitude that he asked this question which I said earlier is one of total importance. What does this teach me? Among many, it teaches me that prayer is the right forum for the deepest questions, the most important concerns, the most profound issues; to be answered, to be discussed with and/or poured out unto the ears of the one who is ALL ABLE. How often, do we not raise the right and deepest question in the wrong place, tell the most weighty concern to the weakest ear? Sure, the right question to the wrong person produces no answer. But you will wonder, have I not been telling God my deepest concerns, what answer has he given me? Child of God, may your faith not grow weary! He has given answer and I will tell you what and how. What answer did he give you and how did he answer? I do not intend to keep you online for this longer. The answer to these “what” and “how” is in why Jesus rebuked the apostles and asked them not to tell anyone that he is “the Christ of God” (Lk9;21). You are wondering; Fr Mark how? More questions than answers! Return to my page on Wednesday and find the explanation. God bless you and have a great day!.
