LOSING OUR HEADS IN THE DEBATE ABOUT TORTURE Far too many Americans have divorced the idea of complex thought when it comes to the debate about the morality, legality and the effectiveness of the Bush/Cheney policy of torturing our enemies. The simple intellectual mistake being made by many of my friends on the right (on Facebook and in actuality) is the ridiculous assertion that if I oppose the use of torture by the United States I am therefore support the terrorists who torture us. That accusation has been leveled at me numerous times (even once by someone who said that I enjoy it when Americans are beheaded) and it has become something of a theme in right wing media. It is just plain stupid. There is a great space between demanding that our country follow U.S. and international law regarding torture and condoning its use by others. But it seems lots of so-called conservatives do not acknowledge anything but a cut and dried, black and white view of it. Rational and intelligent people should be able to comprehend the difference.
