DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the overall guidance of the Director, FOM, and the direct supervision of the Senior Forestry Officer/Team Leader, Forest Resources Management Team, and in close collaboration with other units of the Forestry Department and relevant units in other Departments, in the context of the relevant FAO Strategic Objectives (in particular SO2 and SO5), the incumbent will be responsible for providing technical support for the promotion and development of programmes and activities in the fields of agroforestry and urban/peri-urban forestry (UPF) and for the optimization of the roles of forests and trees in the broader landscape. In particular, the incumbent will: supervise and implement normative activities in agroforestry and urban/peri-urban forestry to ensure their full contribution to achieving the goals and objectives under FAO’s Strategic Framework, in particular with respect to SO2,( “Increase and improve provision of goods and services from agriculture, forestry and fisheries in a sustainable manner”) and SO5, (“Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises”); lead, as appropriate, and/or contribute to collaborative work with other FAO units in the fields of land use planning, agroforestry and urban/peri-urban forestry, related to the sustainable production of goods and environmental services provided by trees and forests, especially in relation to the role of trees and forests in food and nutrition security; promote and advise member countries on policies and sound strategies and methods related to agroforestry and urban/periurban forestry for providing goods and services in both rural and urban areas; generate, compile and disseminate technical information, publications, articles, training course materials, websites and other sources of information relating to agroforestry and urban/peri-urban forestry for capacity development and knowledge sharing with special reference to the production and dissemination of normative material (e.g. methodologies, guidelines, and best practices); plan, organize and participate in international meetings, seminars and workshops on matters related to agroforestry and urban/peri-urban forestry; provide support and technical backstopping to field projects and to member countries and institutions in agroforestry, urban/peri-urban forestry and the use of trees outside forest throughout the project formulation and implementation process, when required; cooperate with other UN agencies, national and international organizations with special reference to the promotion and implementation of the relevant UN multilateral environmental agreements and processes (UNCCD, CBD, UNFCCC and UNFF); collaborate with research institutions and agroforestry networks at national and international levels, in particular with the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), for the development of research and transfer of research results and technologies, to enhance the contribution of trees to food and nutrition security and environmental sustainability. perform other related duties as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidates should meet the following: Advanced university degree in Forestry, Agroforestry, Natural resource management or related discipline Seven years of relevant experience in the field of Forestry, Agroforestry, Natural resources management or land use planning/management, including international experience Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese or Russian SELECTION CRITERIA Candidates will be assessed against the following: Extent of knowledge and expertise in agroforestry and urban/peri-urban forestry Extent and relevance of experience in developing countries and knowledge of global issues, international initiatives, agreements and processes related to agroforestry, urban/peri-urban forestry and trees outside forest Ability to effectively plan and organize work and coordinate, supervise and evaluate the work of others Ability to respond promptly to emergencies or unplanned situations as they arise Interpersonal, motivational, networking and training skills Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing Working knowledge of other official languages would be an asset
