LOreal Commits to “Zero Deforestation” by 2020 LOreal has its eye on the tiger. The worlds largest beauty and cosmetics company, which owns 27 international brands, including Garnier, Lancome, Kiehls, and Maybelline, pledged on Thursday to obtain its raw materials from “zero-deforestation” sources by 2020, particularly for palm oil. The palm-oil industry, according to Greenpeace, is the “greatest single cause” of deforestation in Indonesia, which loses as much as 620,000 hectares of rainforest each year—an area the size of Brunei—to oil-palm plantations. As a result, demand for the ubiquitous ingredient, which can found in everything from mascara to M&Ms, is driving the extinction of critically endangered species such as Sumatran tiger, of which fewer than 400 remain in the wild.
