LRPS have released an update on the Whoop Up collisions last night: Lethbridge Regional Police are once again reminding motorists to adjust their driving habits according to the weather and road conditions following a chain reaction collision on Whoop Up Drive Sunday evening. On Dec. 14, 2014 at approximately 5:45 p.m. a 30-year-old female driver operating her vehicle eastbound on Whoop Up Drive in the right hand lane lost control due to the icy conditions. The vehicle initially spun to the left then came back across the roadway to the right and collided with an eastbound vehicle being driven by a 20-year-old female. Neither driver was injured. Minutes later a second collision involving two additional vehicles occurred in the same area. Upon police arrival numerous vehicles had stopped along the roadway and it wasnt immediately clear which ones had been involved in the collision. Police subsequently closed the eastbound lanes of Whoop Up Drive while the collisions were investigated. The speed limit on Whoop Up Drive was also lowered to 60 km/h. No charges were laid in either collision. Police are reminding all drivers that they have a responsibility to operate their vehicles safely in all road and weather conditions. When roads are icy, slow down, allow extra following distance between vehicles and be extra cautious when undertaking maneuvers such as lane changes and merging. Driver overconfidence – driving too fast, following too closely and generally not adjusting driving habits for less than ideal road conditions – continues to be a primary cause of collisions.
