LT is making more press! Below is a selection from a new book called The Agile Church by Dr. Dwight Zscheile. He writes: In Renton, Washington, a dying established Lutheran church was torn down and replaced by a new form of Christian ministry. In the new multi-use building, apartments for veterans are upstairs while on the street level is Luther’s Table, a café, pub, neighborhood gathering spot, gallery, performance space, and worshipping community birthed and supported in partnership with another established congregation in the area, the local ELCA synod, and the denomination. The café space incorporates elements from the old church such as pews and stained glass windows. It claims and carries forward Martin Luther’s practice of holding “table talks”—conversations about God and life with colleagues, students, and friends. It is open, inviting, and accessible to people who would never enter a traditional church. Rather than receive tips, the café invites donations that support local community service ministries. This new church plant is meeting people in this profoundly unchurched area where they are, carrying forward elements of the past, and translating and opening church traditions up into expressions that people can enter into.
