LUGANVILLE RED BAG: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? In February the - TopicsExpress

LUGANVILLE RED BAG: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? In February the Municipality will be introducing a new rubbish collection system. This will be known as the ‘Red Bag’ and is a user pays system; so the less rubbish you produce the fewer bags you will need to buy. The large Red Bags are made from strong plastic, are approximately 80litres in volume and will cost 80VT. The bags will go on sale from Monday, February 16th and will be available in all shops and stores throughout Luganville. We wanted to ensure that the Red Bag would be affordable for all residents and we believe that 80VT is a fair price for Luganville. It is less than the price of your local paper, a kilo of rice, a 100vt shell of kava, a bag of tomatoes at the market, it is even less than a TVL/Digicel top up and less than a taxi fare around town. The Municipality will receive a percentage from every bag sold. This money will enable the Waste Management Office to be a self funding, but not profit making unit of the Municipality. Therefore any money received through Property Taxes WILL NOT be used to fund waste management services, so you are not being charged twice for waste collection. The price of the Red Bag includes: • The cost to manufacture and supply the bag • The cost of collecting the waste • The cost of disposing of the waste • The margins for the supplier and the retailers/wholesalers. The bags can be purchased individually (for 80VT) or you can save money by purchasing a pack of 20 Red Bags for 70vt each (1,400Vt total).
