LUKE& THE APOSTLES ARE BACK. ONE OF CANADA’S VERY BEST ‘60’s BANDS with SPECIAL GUEST GEORGE OLLIVER AT THE BLACK SWAN FRIDAY OCT. 4 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WHO: Luke & The Apostles, with special guest George Olliver and Pete Otis & The DejaBlues WHAT: An edgy reminder of Toronto’s storied rock ‘n roll past WHERE: The Black Swan 154 Danforth Ave.Toronto WHEN: Friday October 4 (doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m.) TICKETS: Advance $25.00 online at songtown.ca , or peteotismusic@hotmail More info: 416 522-9896 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ While Variety Magazine in early 1955 predicted “Rock ‘n’ Roll will be gone by June” and a 1956 editorial in the Kansas City Star about the new “fad” sweeping America proclaimed “it can no more survive than goldfish swallowing,” Toronto band Luke and the Apostles has demonstrated the naysayers were way wrong. Twice this year already the iconic ‘Toronto Sound’ band from the late 60’s demonstrated palpably that the Boomer generation seems in no hurry to be giving up the “passing idiom” any time soon. And the still energetic five-piece, which includes three of its original members, is set to do it yet again, —along with another famed veteran of the scene, singer George Olliver as special guest— on Friday, October 4 at Toronto’s Black Swan Tavern. Band founder Luke Gibson, guitar icon Mike McKenna and keyboardist Peter Jermyn will be supported by David Reaume on bass and drummer Rob Kirkpatrick. Luke& The Apostles sold-out Purple Onion Reunion shows in May at El Mocambo and in early September at Cadillac Lounge. The Apostles’ enduring appeal may stem in part from when it was that they came on the scene and the ground they broke for other Canadian bands. The group played a series of eight storied shows with The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane at the then-named O’Keefe Centre and at City Hall Square in 1967. Olliver, who recently celebrated 50 years in the business and was the subject of a sold-out star-studded ‘Honouring Our Own’ concert at St. Clements Hall in April, continues to cavort like a young man on stage and this is a very special performance with Luke& The Apostles indeed—not to be missed. The October 4 concert will be kicked off by opening act Pete Otis & DejaBlues. The show, in the upstairs fully renovated lounge of the Swan, at 154 Danforth Ave., starts at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7. Admission is $25 and advance tickets can be purchased through songtown.ca or by contacting Otis at peteotismusic@hotmail. For more information, photos or interviews contact Otis at peteotismusic@hotmail or by calling 416-522-9896.
