LUXOR A trip to Egypt that does not include a few days in Luxor, the ancient Waset of Egyptians and latest Thebes of the Greeks, is unthinkable to me. In each of my trip I have planned a stay in Luxor and each time this has allowed me to discover aspects of this area which until then were unknown to me. Luxor, beyond its intrinsic characteristics, is the starting point for many excursions such as Abydos, Isna, El-Khab, Idfu, Tod, etc... For your stay I recommend the Mercure Luxor Hotel which is located in a central long-Nile; you will visit the city, the temples of Luxor and Karnak, the museum and to reach the landing of the ferry to the western bank of the Nile without need transportation. A better quality offers the Hotel Steigenberger Nile Palace with a walk a little longer. If you can afford, the Sofitel Old Winter Palace, is by far the best. For travelers, not for tourist, who want to truly enjoy the real atmosphere that these places can give and not get scared by the lack of air conditioning and private bathroom the better is the Habu Hotel in front of the Temple of Ramses III on the West bank. Buy a guide for your visit so as not to get lost among the many wonders that offers Luxor; near the Old Winter Palace you will find a couple of well-stocked library of guides in your language. Even in prehistoric times the region of Luxor was inhabited and in Predynastic Period was settlements on the western bank. In Early Dynastic Period Waset becomes an integral part of Egypt. Its importance increases during the Middle Kingdom when the principles of Waset of the XI Dynasty become the rulers of the country. In this period the local deity is Montu, the god of war. Waset reaches its peak during the New Kingdom when the sovereigns of this period elect Waset as their capital assuming Amun as dynastic god. Magnificent temples were built in honor of Amun, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu which together make up the Theban Triad. Throughout the New Kingdom were also built vast necropolis on the west bank of the Nile, in the Valley of the Kings and in the Valley of the Queens for the kings, queens and princes and on the hills at the edge of the area cultivated for dignitaries, officials and people of prestige.
