LVC secondary science education students Paige Riddle, Kevin Doty, and Andrew Flinchbaugh recently experienced science in action at the campus of the Penn State College of Medicine. The purpose of their trip was to be able to inspire their future classroom students by seeing the skill sets that current and future scientists would need. While at the College of Medicine, they observed an Institutional Biosafety and Recombinant DNA meeting under the regulation of the National Institutes of Health. After the meeting they met with biosafety and chemical safety officers to learn about safety best practices for their own future science classrooms. Paige, Kevin, and Andrew concluded their visit with a tour of a variety of biomedical research labs and The Cancer Institute. One of the more interesting artifacts they saw during their visit was the widely used and famous HeLa cells in culture. The HeLa cells are the backdrop for the New York Times best selling book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
