La Cage Entry 4: Tuesday night was another music night. - TopicsExpress

La Cage Entry 4: Tuesday night was another music night. Previous rehearsals were more about the chorus pieces but last night involved incorporating a little more of the solos; a process of fleshing out the scenes. I already noted that there are some very difficult key changes. High notes are difficult for me. I lack serious formal musical training. Somehow, it is still fun. I was blessed with a pretty good singing voice which I have not used sufficiently, and is therefore, not as good as it once was. My mother tells me the first popular song I ever sang was Do You Wanna Dance. The first one I recollect was Nancy Sinatras Boots. (I still like that one!) Growing up in church, I sat next to my father as he sang the bass parts in the old hymns which I still love to this day. (I like the newer worship music just fine, but the old stuff can still tear me up...) Out of five sons, I was the only one who developed into a true bass. I actually noticed that I was singing an octave lower than my classmates in second or third grade. I did not know what it was called then, but I was aware that I sang lower. I was not really interested in vocal music in school. Not sure why. I was interested in band and started on the trumpet in 4th grade switching to the baritone by 6th grade. I learned to read treble clef but not bass clef, which has really hindered me over the years. My junior high band teacher apparently did not like kids that much and by the time I finished my freshman year of high school, I was pretty much done with band. We moved to Tennessee during my sophomore year. I was involved with the youth choir at church. My family sang together at church but I begged out of it, unfortunately. I always felt awkward at that stage of life and I suppose that had a lot to do with it. Shortly after college, three guys I had been in youth choir with (one being my brother, Aaron) wanted to start a Southern Gospel quartet and, whether I wanted to or not, I was the only available bass. I did get into it and enjoyed it. We called ourselves The Inner Circle (as in the group of disciples close to Christ...not to be confused with the reggae group, Inner Circle which performs the theme for Cops.) Work situations caused the group to disband several years later, although I still hold those days dear as well as my partners. About all that I did after that was to sing karaoke at a local establishment on Thursday nights. Mostly George/Garth/Alan but Id through in change ups occasionally. I was told by several people I should have pursued a career in country music, but somehow, living out of the back of a pick up truck and hauling equipment everywhere with me for ten years just never appealed to me. When I met my wife, I broadened my music interests a bit to include a little more jazz and some showtunes. Still cant stand hip hop or rap, though. So...there is my life in music to this point. Im not sure how many Southern Baptist quartet members have ever performed in La Cage Aux Folles but heres one whos having fun with it!
