La Serenissima ~ a story of love. Excerpt ~ Chapter XI The Invitations. White feathers then blew past us downwind of the canal, one after the other, with some settling on the surface of the tranquil water sailing down with the slow-moving current. Some had blood stains splattered on them. Something then stirred from across the canal, amongst the overgrown weeds that grew in the cracks and damaged stonework outside those huge doors. The steps and stone platform had a small wildlife garden where, through lack of maintenance, now sprouted a mini haven along the bank for birds and insects. I held Michaels hand without looking at him directly, and we squeezed them together for support. Black fur could be seen in the gaps of the wild flowers, and we saw white, blobs of dazzling white between the foliage. It moved, it struggled. It showed itself to us. A large tom cat whose fur was blue black shone in the midday sun. It slunk itself towards us, positioning itself so that it faced us from across the water. Its iridescent eyes looked at us as though we were prey as well. In its mouth was a beautiful white dove. The feline raised its head as though proudly showing us its prize catch. The sinister cat never took its eyes from us as it gripped its teeth deeper into the dangling wing. It played with it, and the whole time the doves tiny black eye focused on me..........
