Label The Truth - Ohio SCRIPT TO CALL CONGRESS “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) is suggesting voluntary GMO labeling legislation, which would most likely be ignored by the food industry, and could also undermine states rights to mandate labeling. It is critical that we stop any attempt by Congress to pass legislation of this sort. To do this, we need to remind our representatives that they are there to represent the voices of “We the People” and that we are paying attention to what they are doing in Washington D.C. We must compel our elected representatives to do their job and ensure that we are protected from bad legislation. Remember, your elected representatives work for you! STEP ONE: U.S. Congressional Directory Washington, D.C. contactingthecongress.org/ or call (202) 224.3121 STEP TWO: 3 – MINUTE GMO LABELING SCRIPT Please call the local, regional and D.C. offices of each Senator and Representative to have your voice heard multiple times. Start with your Congressional Representative first, then call both Senators. We need thousands of calls going to Washington to make sure they are very aware that we are watching. E A S Y S C R I P T: (Breathe and talk slowly. You will do just fine. Be polite and confident.) “Hi, this is (your full name). I am a constituent of Rep/Senator (name). I live in (name of city). I am calling because the GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) is suggesting voluntary GMO labeling legislation, which could be ignored by the food industry, and it would also undermine states rights to require labeling. I would like Rep/Sen (name) to please oppose any potential legislation that might be introduced. Voluntary labeling is not enough! Do you know Rep/Sen (name) position on GMO labeling? Will he/she vote Yes or No on a bill of this sort? (Regardless of their response, just continue) Once again, I am requesting that Rep/Sen (name) vote NO on any legislation that would prohibit states from requiring labels on GMO foods! Please be sure he/she gets my message. Once you call your Representative, if you can spare 4 more minutes, please call your Senators for good measure.
