Labors grassroots polling strategy a proven winner in securing Labors return to office in Victoria. Inexcusable to not now apply its lessons to the reform and renewal of the party. No ifs. No buts. Democratisation of the party through direct election of its governing bodies. Adoption of strategic plans for more effectively gaining, retaining and involving members, with agreed key performance indicators and regular reporting of outcomes to party conferences. Proper induction courses for new members and on-going skilling of members to maximise takeup of their attributes and energies. Branches of new types to cater for diversity of member interests, identities and circumstances. Proper support of branches such as through provision of speaker banks, discussion materials and access to resources including audio-visual equipment, desk top publishing and web based communication including via social media. Not be too proud to learn from the precedent and example of campaigning unionism as set out by Greg Combet in his seminal memoir The Fight of My Life.
