Lack of exercise could lead to early death, according to a new study of more than 330,000 European men and women. The researchers found that twice as many deaths could be due to inactivity than to obesity. Fred Hutch’s Dr. Anne McTiernan, who studies links between weight loss, exercise and cancer prevention, points out that the European study only compared obese people with non-obese people, and she and others have found that being overweight (having a BMI between 25 and 30) also increases risk of many diseases. “My take is that both physical activity and weight control are critical,” she said. “It’s not a question of whether ‘fit or fat’ is more important. What’s important is: ‘Be fit and not fat.’”
