Ladies- beware of the high heels! Around this time of the year - TopicsExpress

Ladies- beware of the high heels! Around this time of the year there seems to be a lot of Christmas parties, lots of chances for ladies and gents to get dressed up and dance the night away. But what may look good may not necessarily be the best thing for your body After having two wonderful sessions with a lovely young woman, where she managed to get herself back running, she came into clinic yesterday limping with knee pain. What had changed from the previous two weeks when the pain came on? Christmas parties and standing and dancing in heels all night. Heels put your foot into a position where the calf muscle is shortened constantly, unable to lengthen at any point like it should naturally be able to. This will not only lead to sore/tight calves but will also result in the body lengthening another muscle to keep balance in the system. What happens if that lengthened muscle is a glute max, a quad or a hamstring. The integrity of the hip and knee joint would then be compromised and could lead to compensation or pain in either of those areas or anywhere else in the body. Now Im not saying abandon heels altogether. Clearly we wont be able to convince everyone to give up theirs up., and besides, itll probably put me out of business :p HOWEVER, learn to manage your body. If you spend a night or day wearing heels, make sure to give the calves an experience of length as well at different points during the day. We only have one body and use it from the moment were born to the day we die. Look after it Simon ([email protected])
