Ladies Football Round 5 - 06/04/14 Padraig Pearse GAC 3-10 St Kevins GAC 0-05 The second meeting of the season between these two sides proved to be a much more one-sided affair than their previous encounter, when the Pearses ladies emerged victorious by a slender 3 point margin. On this occasion, Padraig Pearse Ladies produced an outstanding all-round team performance to which their Kevins counterparts had no answer. Pearses showed their intentions with an early goal from Thelma Lonergan, and in defence, were quick to smother any threat from St Kevins attack. Karen Tracey, trying her hand in goals, combined well with Karen Lynch playing at number 2 which laid the platform for much of Pearses counter-attacking football in the opening period. The Pearses half-back line also saw a welcome return from injury from St Brigids Belfast and former Antrim county star, Catherine Mullan. St Kevins could simply not handle her tenacity and pace, as she made countless forays forward, in tandem with team captain, Eliza Geelan who once again showed her domination in the middle of the park. Scores from Mags Fitzgerald, playing in her preferred position at half-forward, centre-half forward and playmaker Susan Kiernan, and the ever-reliable Anne Dempsey from placed kicks gave Pearses a deserved 8 point at advantage at the interval as Kevins were held scoreless. The shut-out on the St Kevins scoreboard was largely attributed to full-back Lisa McGowans exhibition of high fielding under pressure and fellow defender Joyce Cunninghams courageous efforts to pick up break ball around her own goal square. Half-Time: Padraig Pearse GAC 1-05 St Kevins GAC 0-00 St Kevins opened the second spell more brightly than they did the first, and were rewarded with a couple of scores shortly after the break as they grew in confidence. Pearses centre-half back Anna Kennedy, however, had other ideas, and was influential in re-organising her team-mates as she refused to let them take their foot off the pedal. Indeed, further scores from Lorraine Tynan, Susan Kiernan and a second goal from Thelma Lonergan dispelled any prospect of a Kevins fightback. Lisa McCombs continued to illustrate her tireless work ethic at midfield, and was ably assisted by Emma Coffey, who was also returning from injury at left-half back. More scores from Lonergan, taking her personal tally to 2-03, and a customary goal from Charlene Donaghy coming off the bench resulted in a comfortable winning margin for the Pearses ladies. Manager Kelly, was his usual frantic self pacing the sideline in his Saffron jersey while co-manager Laverty remained mild-mannered having been put through his paces in the mens game during the days earlier throw-in. It appears that the pairs training methods are paying dividends with another terrific display from the Pearses girls, but all eyes will be focusing on peaking towards the business end of the season. Next on the agenda is a 10am throw-in against a hungry Garryowen side, who will be keen to improve on their last outing against Na Piarsaigh. Full-Time Padraig Pearse GAC 3-10 St Kevins GAC 0-05 1.
